Hunter Renfrow — all 5-10, 185 pounds of him — made perhaps the play of the game early in the first quarter of the “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Raiders and Chargers.
The Las Vegas receiver had his head on a swivel as the Chargers attempted to catch the Raiders napping on fourth-and-12 from the Raiders’ 41. Punter Ty Long took the snap and threw to a wide-open Tevaughn Campbell down the sideline for what looked like an easy first down . . .
. . . If not for Renfrow absolutely lowering the boom on the cornerback (who, by the way, has 2-inch, 15-pound size advantage in that matchup):
Kudos to Renfrow not only for diagnosing the trick play and traveling to make a defensive play from his normal punt return position, but also engaging Campbell with a form tackle to dislodge the ball. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they couldn’t take advantage of the excellent field position and turned the ball over on downs at the 37 without gaining a first down.
Renfrow struggled in other areas of the game, however, dropping a third-down pass from quarterback Derek Carr on the team’s opening series and muffing a punt later on in the second quarter (the ball went out of bounds, so the Raiders retained possession).
Still, Twitter couldn’t quite believe what it saw from Renfrow, wide receiver and special teams ace:
