South American qualifying to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has reached its 11th round of matches and there are already some teams with their backs to the wall come Sunday.
Chile (7 points) hosts Paraguay (12 points) and a home win for Alexis Sanchez & Co. is imperative to stay close to the upper half of the table. Bolivia (6 points) will similarly not want to float adrift and it can bring Peru (11 points) back to the pack at home at altitude.
No such worries for Brazil (27 points), which is still marching on with its perfect record. But winning in Colombia (14 points) against a desperate team is a different proposition. It will be the best game of the round along with Argentina (19 points) vs. Uruguay (16 points) with both teams coming off scoreless draws on Thursday. Uruguay can potentially catch Argentina with a win.
The top four teams in the standings below earn a direct ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the fifth-place team will advance to a playoff series.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works
It’s not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It’s three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.
After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
